Into Penzance

Well the day is here.  Today I head down to Penzance to start my end to end. Tomorrow is Day One. I have a mixture of excitement and dread coming over me. It looks OK on a piece of paper but I know it will be testing and so much can go wrong. But I have to do it for so many reasons.  It is very difficult to explain but I kind of led my way towards this ever since taking up cycling in October 2012.

The hardest part is saying goodbye to the love of my life Debby XXX  She kindly gave me a lift near to Shrewsbury for the train which I was glad about. She dropped me off at The Bridgewater Arms car park in Harmer Hill so I had a nice 6 mile trip into the station.

Bye sweetheart ! Love you !!  See you in 4 days at the end of Day Three....

The weather forecast for Cornwall was... HEAVY RAIN so last minute decided to get an old bright orange raincoat for the early days.  I was worried people might ask me if I worked for British rail.  I could have some fun with this maybe sending people off on all the wrong journeys !! HEHE  But I didn't.  The other reason was I was very worried about the dreaded A30 in Cornwall and A38 Devon so if I stood out alongside my bank of 5 sets of lights I could not do more to keep safe.

Another thing I didn't think of was hanging Charlene up in the bike store and finding my seat I was far away and anyone could have walked off with her so I was a bit paranoid about this.  I knew the return journey from JoG was 12 hours so I had to do something about this.  Bike lock added to list.

Changed trains at Birmingham onto Platform 8,  good omen, I was doing the lejog in 8 days and it's my lucky number too.

The train arrived and a man had fainted on board and when I got on I realised why. It was 102 degrees in the shade as the air con was busted and everyone was flustered and moaning quietly to themselves so no-one else could hear.  Love the British.  Everything OK here, Yes thank you. !!!

As per usual I get into the wrong seat and told to move by a group of angry determined ladies.  Not arguing ladies. I'll get my coat.

Food trolley arrived and I overheard the lady say this was the last sandwich. The old lady thought about this for a moment and said she would take it. So by this time stress levels were high as I had packed some food for the journey but you know what it's like when you hear it is the last one.  You really want it !! So I wrestled the old woman to the ground for the last sandwich. Unfortunately she won !!!  Not my proudest moment.  To be fair she had been working out she told me later and I do have skinny cycling arms.   hehehe

Did I mention that I went down in the oldest clothes I could find.  I call them my painting clothes. Biggest joke of all, I hate painting and I always get a professional in called Roy Bradley, hes great and I am rubbish at it.  Atleast i have a great excuse now. Sorry sweetheart, i cannot paint that bathroom. I left my painting clothes in a B&B in Lands End !!!  Part of the kit was an 80s Adidas t shirt I bought for an 80's party.  What the heck must have I looked like. !!

Bike safe and sound.... (except for me checking on it every stop to make she hasn't gone AWOL)

Cosford airshow..

Train on time  yippee...

Charlene, close your eyes. You are in the mens toilet !!!  TUT TUT

Lucky 8

Goodnight C, I'll wake you when we get to Penzance...

When we got there it was piddling down. Arrived at 8:39 PM. Luckily had a taxi booked and luckily the taxi was waiting.  I had to hold my bike on the fastest 10 mile taxi ride I have ever taken to Sennen where my lovely B&B was waiting.  So I hadn't eaten much that day but what I had was nearly back in my lap after warp factor 7 to my final destination...

Sunny Bank (unsunny-bank)  was a lovely B&B.  OK, first wobble came now.  Alone in a B&B in a dark, rainy place at the end of the country. Panic did come I have to admit. So a call home was needed.  Goodnight, sleep tight, tomorrow will be the start of the biggest thing I will possibly ever do....

Lejog update.

This is a temporary book mark for the blog. I am sat in my B&B in John O Groats and I did it.  All didn't go to plan. A few tears were shed a few more than I would have liked but I did it. With the help of my wonderful family and friends I kept on pedalling until the land ran out  I promise to get this blog filled with all my memories and thank you for all who have donated their hard earned cash. Please keep it coming if you can

The day has finally arrived. Started planning on Boxing Day and now here it is. Almost £1,000 raised so far which is amazing and I would like to thank again everyone who shelled out their hard earned cash. You are lovely people and it means a lot. There are 3 reasons this means so much to me (Beware emotional bit coming up)

The reason I planned this and the whole thing is in memory of a man who will always be my hero. My dad. He had such a zest for life. Always was life and soul of any party. He lived for my mum and loved her so much which me and Nick my brother could see all day every day. He did so much for others and never raised his voice once in anger. He will always be with me and I hope he can see me setting off from a very rainy Lands end tomorrow morning. Love you dad. Happy Father's Day.

The other reason is the charities. I chose these especially because they are truly awe inspiring causes. Hope House Children's Hospices. Help for Heroes and Kenyan Schools Project. Their work is stunning and when I find the days getting tougher along the route I will remember how lucky we are to have people like this in our lives and keep pedalling.

Last reason is my wife Debby and 2 amazing children Jessie & Callum.  They are my life and I love them so much and I feel I have to raise the bar in my life constantly to keep up with them.  They are quite simply my reason for living and I am constantly in awe at how special they are.  Love you all so much.

Sorry about that. Let's leave the emotional stuff (for now) and get on with this. Get riding Owen and don't forget your raincoat !!

New treads

New set of treads as a last minute tweak from Demon Tweeks.  Charlene has new shoes.  She shall go to the ball.  Am I going insane. Probably... yes. !!!

Spare tyre incase of another blow out, also acts as an ass-saver for the rain that was my worst nightmare that has come true in Cornwall on Monday !!!  Weather forecast is shocking !!

Oh well, only one thing for it,  shut up and get on with it Owen.

Thank you Uncle Norm & Auntie Rose XXX

2 days until lift off.

Last night I went on a test run on the bike fully loaded like a Buckaroo horse with all my kit and everything I will take along and it didn't exactly go as I would have liked.  About 7 miles out I heard a load pop and my tyre exploded.  Why is it always the rear tyre which is a real pain to replace with the chain attached !!!  Also learned a good lesson as I forgot with tri-bars on that it is virtually impossible to put your bike in the upside down position to replace a tube on the side of the road.  So I got to some grass in someones driveway and got it changed.  No problem but when checking the tyre I found the pop was the sound of a 1cm hole being made from the inner tube exploding inside the tyre !!   So today I need to buy new tyres,  not exactly what I had in mind for today !!

I managed to limp home and thank you to my angels for allowing this to happen now rather than in Cornwall on Monday morning.

What have I learned....
  • Be prepared for the worst
  • Always carry at least 2 spare inner tubes
  • Practice a change of tyre and inner tube and get to know how to do it,  it is easy when you have done it before
  • Stay away from potholes/stones/wet spots, etc.
  • Check inside the tyre to see what caused the blow out
  • Do not over or under inflate  110 psi is OK !!!
Here is a great website with loads of top tips (GCN)

Thank you so much Ian, Kristy, Kyle and Harrison Williams xxxx

One week today !!!!

The time is nigh..  no more talking about doing the end to end. Now it is time to get on with the job.  I am obsessed with only one thought right now.  The weather forecast !!

So far it is looking like it could either rain, be sunny or be cloudy.  Thanks weather websites for making me feel at rest !!  The one thing I am more worried about though is the dreaded wind direction. Fingers crossed it is a South Westerly, which is the only real reason I chose to do le-jog rather than jog-le.  I also realised I have been saying the wrong thing all these years.  I thought a North Easterly wind was what I wanted but it is always from the direction the wind comes from not where its headed.  So sorry up there, for the last 6 months scrub that I prayed for a NE wind,  it is SW OK,  Thank you. Hope you can help.

P.S.  After I get to Bath please can you change it to a South wind all the way to John O Groats XX

P.P.S.  But not too strong... XXX

Apart from this final prep is focussed on getting my bike and kit all ready alongside the final few cycling sessions to keep my legs spinning. The weather is keeping me on and off the turbo indoor trainer though as I would hate to catch a cold now before the event, it is raining cats and dogs outside today.

I tried to follow a strict regime of building up the riding to a large number of miles before I go but there really is no proper way to train for a long distance 8 day event.  I want to feel fresh and ready for riding not knackered from training like mad.  I have read you can only really get as fit as possible for this and then your body will adapt and get used to the day after day long distances while you are doing it.  Apparently Day 3 is the dark day but luckily that is the day I will be headed home to Ellesmere.

Here is my training log to show what I have done...

My battle plan has kept me focussed pinned to my wall at HQ !!!

Bike booked in for a service tomorrow.

Plan is to do 20-30 miles a day this week (looks like the turbo will be red hot as weather forecast is bad)

Carb load as much as my belly can take (i.e. eats loads of pasta, rice and cakes)

When I get my bike back from it's beauty treatment and lubed up to glory I will start to load it up with the stuff I need.

Makes me remember a game I had as a child...

My plan is to keep it as minimal as possible but essential stuff has got to be packed.

So my list is...
  • 3 spare inner tubes, tyre levers & CO2 gas cartridges
  • Multi tool with chain splitter
  • Flip flops
  • Train tickets
  • contact lenses/glasses
  • phone & charger
  • Garmin charger
  • toothbrush/paste
  • Medical kit
  • Chamois cream
  • Midge cream
  • Ear plugs
  • Antibac & sun cream sachets
  • Debit card and £20 cash
  • Waterproof jacket & shoe covers
  • Food (gels/energy bars)
  • Spare pump to top up
  • Drink bottles x 2 and electrolytes
  • Rear lights x 3 !!
  • Phone has bike shops along way and route programmed in
  • Finally, top bar route to stick on bike like below pic...

I hope it is not too heavy but I have no choice and believe me if you knew what I usually pack for a holiday you would be amazed at how little I am actually taking along.  If I was going to Majorca for a week I would have looked something like this.

I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated so far, we are up to just over £750 net of gift aid which is amazing.  Thank you everyone so much. Please check this blog to see your personal thank you message.

Our mission is to deliver an enduring national network of support for our wounded and their families. We will inspire and enable those who have made sacrifices on our behalf to achieve their full potential. In the 12 months leading up to March 2015 we have helped over 4,000 Veterans and military personnel - and their families - through our network of Recovery Centres. The war in Afghanistan may be over, but for those who have suffered life-changing injuries, their battles are just beginning. We've estimated that, of the 220,560 individuals deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq between 2001 and 2014, up to 75,000 servicemen and women (and their families) may need our support in the future. We will not let them fight these battles alone.
